1954 Is granted to the United States the use of air base in Wheelus Field until 1970 (Wheelus AFB) , in exchange for seven million dollars and 24 thousand tons of wheat for the first year, four million dollars a year for the next six and a one million a year for the remaining.
1955 The French Government agrees to evacuate their bases and troops still present in the Fezzan region.
1956 Drilled the fir oil-well on the border with Algeria by the Libyan American Oil.
1957 Is signed the agreement between Italy and Libya (The Italian State pay to Libya 4,812,500,000 Italian lire, transfers all the state properties and of agricultural colonization institutes, and also social security contributions paid by italians) and quits every dispute. [note 1]
1959 End of the management of institutions for colonization with the budget of twenty years of activity in which they cleaned up and made productive 40,401 hectares of desert.
1959 Near Zelten is drilled the largest reservoir and start the exploitation by oil companies Shell, Oasis, Gulf, Texas and American Overseas.
1961 Completed the 167 kilometer pipeline to the harbour of Marsa Brega.
1961-1964 It completes the exodus from all the agricultural villages following the Libyan law of 1960 on the ownership of property. In 1964 remaining in Libya 27.000 Italians of whom 24.000 in the capital.

The 1967 Arab-Israeli crisis has repercussions in Libya addressed with violence and fires of shops. United States evacuated 6 thousand civilians with an air-bridge, while the 5 thousand Jews of Libya including many Italians are obliged to leave the country.

9th July, in a speech in Misurata, Libyan leader invites the
Italian
Foreign Minister Aldo Moro in Libya to pay an official visit,

a crisis of government prevents this gesture of rapprochement.

21 July are issued the Libyan Laws to confiscate
all assets
(approximately 400 billion lire to
the value of 1970) of Italians and Jews and the expulsion of all
residents in violation of the 1957 Treaty and the
UN
resolution [ note 2] of protection of Italian
citizens and
their property including the
retirement contributions that Italy previously
transferred to Libya.
Italy merely face, totally unprepared
the forced exodus of 20,000 Italians.
1976 Libya buys 10% stake in Fiat ( the larger italian car manufacturer) for 415 million dollars
1986 15th April Aviation American bombing Tripoli, and later two SCUD missiles are launched against Lampedusa (Italian southern isle) where is set an american receiving radio station but fail the target. On 23rd September Fiat reacquire the shares held by financial Libyan LAFICO to 3 billion dollars.
1998 During the Prodi government Foreign Minister Dini sign the agreement with Libya (Known as the Dini-Muntasser agreement) without any form of compensation for confiscated property to the Italians in 1970 and without assuming the burden. Is promised the construction of an hospital.
2002 Italy donate to Libya equipment of the center Traumatological 'Hospital in Benghazi.
2004 October 7th was inaugurated the Italian-Libyan gas pipeline in the presence of Libyan Leader and Italian Prime Minister Berlusconi . The usual Libyan "day of the revenge" aginst italians is cleared and is promised the opportunity to Italians born in Libya to return as tourist.
2005 October 7h The day of revenmge is restored while the ban on return to Italians born in Libya has never been removed.
2007 Italian Hammangi cemetery in the heart of the city is finally rearranged (the work was begun some years earlier) and approximately 6,500 corpses are arranged in the area restored finally safe from abandonment looting and desecration that lasted from 1970. The remaining part of old cemetery of about 80,000 square metres will be returned to the city of Tripoli that will benefit for green or sports facilities.
