I - IV cent.  Roman Empire Domination  the three cities "Tripolis" expand, Leptis becomes Leptis Magna for having given birth to the emperor Septimius Severus. 
 The region has become the granary of the Roman Empire

630 The Arabs from 'Egypt conquered the region conducting some centuries of wars against the Berbers and bringing the country  to decline.

1510 Spanish returns  to the city and then transfer  the possession, with Malta,  to the Knights of St. John expelled  by Rodi

1550 The Turks conquered Tripoli,  but in reality the pirates  leads the government.  Tripoli is a  secure harbour  of refuge for pirates who infest the Mediterranean.

1711 The city conquest independence from the Turks under the command of Ahmed Pasha Karamanli but remains a refuge for pirates

1801-1805 U.S. marines liberate the ship Philadelpia captured by the Pirates, landed on the coast and reach by  walking  Derna (this fact is  mentioned in the US Marines song)  then  it is  signed a peace treaty.

1825 The fleet of the Kingdom of Sardinia under the command of Captain-Lieutenant Francis Sivori on behalf of King Carlo Felice acts to resolve a conflict and over two hundred sailors entering the port and fire damage to the fleet of Bey.

1835 The town back under the direct control of 'Turkish empire that governs despite the strong pushes independence of the country

1911 Italian troops conquered Tripoli in the Italo-Turkish war  but the rest of the country is out of control.   The  nationalists rebels see the opportunity for independence and have no reason to move from Turkish domination to that of Italy.

1912-1934 Is the  more bloody and painful  period of the clash between nationalists and the army, destruction and violence, deportations, concentration camps and use of chemical weapons.  It concludes with the capture (1931) and the sentencing to death of head of the separatists Omar El Muktar,  for Libya  a national hero.

1934 Marshal  Italo Balbo was appointed  Libya Governor (Tripolitania and Cyrenaica) and act  a policy of  distancing itself from the previous policy of cruelty, clears the concentration camps, grace most of the rebels starting the process of normalisation with a view of future migrations-

1936  The plan for construction of  agricultural villages (Villaggi colonici)  on lands acquired in 1932 has been completed

1937 The population includes 2711 farm families, Balbo starts  a plan for a mass colonization with the aim of reaching 20,000 settlers a year for five years.

1938 In October  the first 20,000 settlers arrived in Libya from 'Italy

1940 Italy enters into war and June 28 th  in the sky of Tobruk the plane of Italo  Balbo  on which also travelled his friend Nello  Quilici is shot by friend fire by mistake.

1940-1945  Libya is  alternatevely occupied by all armies from the Italian than German to British. Iin the villages of cirenaica almost all the olive trees and plantations has been destroyed. At the end of war begins control and  supervision of BMA (British Military Administration ).

1951 On 24 December  King Mohammed Idris I proclaims independence of the country

1952 Start the exodus of most of the  Italian settlers specially those in areas away from cities.

1953 Libya adheres to the Arab League

1954 Is granted to the United States the use of air base in Wheelus Field until 1970  (Wheelus AFB) , in exchange for seven million dollars and 24 thousand tons of wheat for the first year, four million dollars a year for the next six and a one million a year for the remaining.

1955 The French Government agrees to evacuate their bases and troops still present in the Fezzan region.

1956 Drilled the fir  oil-well  on the border with Algeria by the Libyan American Oil.

1957 Is signed  the agreement  between Italy and  Libya (The Italian State   pay to Libya 4,812,500,000 Italian lire, transfers  all the state properties and of  agricultural colonization institutes, and  also social security contributions paid by italians) and quits every dispute. [note 1]

1959 End of the management of institutions for colonization with the budget of twenty years of activity in which they cleaned up and made productive 40,401 hectares of desert.

1959 Near  Zelten is drilled  the largest reservoir and start the exploitation by oil  companies  Shell, Oasis, Gulf, Texas and American Overseas.

1961 Completed the 167 kilometer pipeline to the harbour  of Marsa Brega.

1961-1964 It completes the exodus from all the  agricultural villages   following the Libyan law of 1960 on the ownership of property. In 1964 remaining  in Libya 27.000  Italians of whom 24.000  in the capital.

1963 is promulgated the new constitution

The 1967 Arab-Israeli crisis has repercussions in Libya addressed with  violence  and fires of  shops. United States  evacuated  6 thousand civilians with an air-bridge,  while the 5 thousand Jews of Libya including many Italians are obliged to leave the country.

1969 King Idris was in Turkey for  healt-treatment and prepares the abdication in favour of Crown Prince Hassan er-Ridà. On 1st  September, the  young aptain of the army Gaddafi proclaims the coup d'état and was appointed Colonel.

1970 Continuing the work of nationalization and the dismantling of  Brithis and Americans military bases- Libya by from France hundred  Mirage airplanes. The Italians who decide to sell the property must store the money into a  Libyan bank . 
 On 9th  July, in a speech in Misurata, Libyan leader invites the Italian Foreign Minister Aldo Moro in Libya to pay  an official visit, but in Italy a crisis of government prevents this gesture of rapprochement.
On 21 July are issued the  Libyan Laws to confiscate  all assets (approximately 400 billion lire to the value of 1970) of Italians and Jews and the expulsion of all residents in violation of the  1957 Treaty and the  UN resolution [ note 2] of  protection of  Italian citizens and their property including the  retirement contributions that Italy  previously transferred  to Libya. 
  Italy merely face, totally unprepared  the forced exodus of 20,000 Italians.

1976 Libya buys 10% stake in Fiat ( the larger italian car manufacturer) for 415 million dollars

1986 15th  April Aviation American bombing Tripoli, and later two SCUD missiles are launched against Lampedusa (Italian southern isle)   where is set  an american receiving radio station  but fail the target.  On 23rd September  Fiat  reacquire the shares held by financial Libyan LAFICO to 3 billion dollars. 

1998 During the Prodi government Foreign Minister Dini sign  the agreement with Libya (Known as the Dini-Muntasser agreement) without any form of compensation for confiscated property to the Italians in 1970  and without assuming  the burden. Is promised the construction of an hospital.

2002 Italy  donate to Libya equipment of the center Traumatological 'Hospital in Benghazi.

2004 October 7th  was inaugurated  the Italian-Libyan gas pipeline in the presence of Libyan Leader and Italian Prime Minister Berlusconi . The usual Libyan "day of the revenge" aginst italians is cleared and is  promised the opportunity to Italians born in Libya to return as tourist.

2005 October 7h  The day of revenmge is  restored while the ban on return to Italians born in Libya has never been removed.

2007 Italian Hammangi cemetery in the heart of the city is finally rearranged (the work was begun some years earlier) and approximately 6,500 corpses are arranged in the area restored finally safe from abandonment looting and desecration that lasted from 1970.   The remaining part of old cemetery  of about 80,000 square metres will be returned to the city of Tripoli that will benefit for  green or sports facilities. 

2008  On 25th July the Libyan press agency announced that Italy will sign a treaty providing for compensation to Libya for 3 billion euros.  The Italian Prime Minister confirms to  press  its willingness to conclude the agreement by August 2008.  No mention of the still open  issue of the properties of 20.000 italians expelled in 1970.

The agreement has been signed on  31st August in Benghazi. Italy to pay $5B to Libya for occupation and apologised for the past colonial occupation.

2008   November 19th  The Italian  Council of Ministers  approves  a law proposal  to  ratify the Benghazi agreement, including a partial refunding for the 20.000 italians expelled in 1970.

2009 February 18th  A national law  aproved by the parliament is issued  [3]  as ratification of the  Benghazi agreement. The agreement includes the possibility for the 20.000 italians expelled in 1970 to vist Libya for tourism or business. The law  provide a statement  for refunding the  20.000 italians expelled in 1970. The amount of refunding   will be issued with a separate law  to be approved in the future. The  approved budget of 150 millions of euro  over three years represent just a symbolic reparation of the  full amount of credit  (3 billions of euro)

2011  February 17th  The People of  Libya start a new revolution  for a new Free Libya. In April the UN issued a resolution (1973) to impose  ano-fly zone over libya to protect civilians. French is the first country to recognize the NTC as the sole legitimate representative of the people of Libya.

2011  October 20th  NTC forces finally  liberated the city of Sirte in the last  battle. During fighting the former leader is mortally wounded. The day marks the end of dicatorship.
